History of Cleveland
Established in the year 1796, Cleveland became one of the most significant shipyards in the entire world. The abundant coal deposits and iron reserves added heavily to many industries. When the Ohio Canal was opened between Lake Erie and Ohio River in 1826 it benefited many people. Cleveland was then incorporated as a city in the year 1836. The economic slowdown in the year 1970 however had a terrible impact on the city– more than hundreds of workers were jobless, factories were closed down and the town's communal fabric started to decay. But in the twentieth century the city ushered a fresh start -- huge refurbishment projects were started and at present, the city is still striving to take a turn for better.
Cleveland has a huge black community, formerly of the Deep South. This community was invited here as a lesser paid labor so that they could work hard in the industries. Cleveland is home to diverse ethnic groups which have been living here for many years.
